Nathan grew up in rural Indiana, never dreaming that he'd end up living and pastoring in an urban center. But in God's plan, he came to Wheaton College in the western suburbs of Chicago in order to prepare for pastoral ministry - what he sensed God calling him to since he was 15 years old. He remembers his time at Wheaton fondly as a time when God brought the Bible and theology alive to him, introduced him to the broader world of Christian thought, prepared his heart for leadership in the church, and exposed him to the mission field that is the city. It was there that he also met his wife, Andrea, and they married in June of 2002. Nathan received a B.A. in Biblical and Theological Studies from Wheaton and continued at the graduate school there, obtaining an M.A. in Biblical Exegesis in 2003. In 2021 he received an M.A. in Urban Ministry from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Prior to coming to Immanuel as the full-time elder in July of 2004, Nathan was on staff part-time at Evanston Bible Fellowship in Evanston, IL, for nearly 2 years. Andrea received her PhD. in Mathematics from Northwestern University and teaches part-time at local universities while primarily focusing on being a mother and serving in the church. Nathan and Andrea have five daughters – Lucy, Mary, Katy, Elly, & Abby – and they live in the Pilsen neighborhood of the UIC Area. In his free time Nathan enjoys reading theology, watching movies, listening to the Cubs, watching and playing sports, riding bikes, urban farming, playing with his kids, and talking with his wife. Nathan's deep passion is to see the God of the gospel glorified through His Word being learned, loved, and lived in the city.
